Energy Saving Window Film and Tax Credits
I am excited to see that window films with energy saving properties are gaining in popularity. While tax credits always sound good, they can be tricky. They are only available in certain areas, I am told, and only for certain types of window films. It seems that windows with metal framing simply do not qualify.
As the power companies become more involved with the public in saving energy, we will likely see more incentives from them.
Apparently a window film provision was added to the American Recovery and Reinvestment Tax Act of 2009. If homeowners have the film installed by December 31, 2010, they can earn a tax credit of 30% of the film cost with a maximum of $1500 (up from $500 previously). I would check with your local energy providers to see what the qualifications are in your area, or who you should contact for more information.
If you can install the window film yourself, you will be saving a lot of money. If you do qualify for the tax credit, it doesn’t cover installation costs- another benefit to installing it yourself.
The non adhesive window films are easier to self install than the adhesive based products, and easy to replace if the film gets damaged for some reason.
The bottom line is that anything you can do to increase your comfort, and reduce the strain on your heating and cooling systems is going to benefit you.
